The Steal: Valentino rock-studs

I have been lusting after these Valentino rock-studs for months now. Celebrities everywhere have been spotted wearing these god-awesome Valentino rock-studs in the form of flats, kitten heels and sling-backs. Olivia Munn, Alexa Chung, Ashley Tisdale, Emma Stone, Brooklyn Decker, Nicky Hilton are a few to name.

Since I haven’t made it in Hollywood yet, I do not own a pair of the above. I looked far and wide, and it would be a travesty to say that any other pair of shoes look like them. The red pair from Sole Society do come pretty close though (and with a price tag of $49.95 too). These are the studded sandals that I think did justice to this style —

How to wear: Printed Pants

This trend is hot, but it does beg the question — how do you wear printed pants?

I’ve picked out 4 different kinds of prints (I have done a post on floral pants before, so am excluding them here). Printed pants can be teamed with :

a) A neutral basic tee to calm it down

b) A sheer shirt to make it slightly more formal. A blazer can also be added

c) A chambray looks good without trying too hard

d) Pick a color in the printed pants and wear a solid color top of that color to complement them well.

Spring Hot Trend – Printed pants

Celebs are tweeting about them (Emma Roberts about the JCrew collection) and they seem to be popping up everywhere. They are available in prints from baroque to floral, tie and dye, paisley and geometric (gone are the days of polka dots alone) and in a variety of fits – skinny, drawstring, capris, straight-cuts.

I went to the mall recently and went gaga over them..every store had some and I wanted to pick them all. But hey, neither do I look like Ms. Alba nor do I make mega bucks like her. So, with trends like these I would pick one or two that fit well to try the style before getting more. This is a fun trend to try and I don’t see it fading any time soon. In fact, it will continue into summer with printed shorts.

Here is an assortment of pants show-casing this trend —

Why people don’t travel

WorldWonders

There is so much talk about how we love to travel, and how traveling is money well spent etc. But, for every 1 person that travels there are probably 4 that don’t..I wonder why? Is it just not something they are into?

And, I’m not even talking about long term travel here, for months at a time, I haven’t even done that myself yet, I’m just talking about getting up and going — seeing places. All I’m saying is, people, there are options out there — to suit every type of person, and take it from anyone who has the bug — it is worth it, much more than the L’oreal or SKII splurge your or your better half will make sometime in their life.

Observing people I know, some of the reasons why I think people don’t travel are..

1) Money: This is a big one. No matter how cheaply you do it, it still costs money to travel. And let’s face it, there’s only so cheap some of us will go. Not everyone has millions of points floating around to use for flights and hotels, and not all of us are willing to backpack it around in hostels. So, for the normal folks, it costs money to book that flight and the average $100/night hotels. Then of course there is the internal travel, food, maybe some shopping, sightseeing to take care of. But, again there are options there for every budget. There are bus or train trips one can do closer to home, heck even a hiking and camping trip!

2) Kids (or pets): There are only so many places you can go depending on how old your kids are. How many people would be willing to lug their child up a trek to Machu Picchu? At that point, sitting around on a beach for a week may sound more enticing. Or even a B&B that one can drive to with a stroller, diaper bag and all the goodies packed away safely in the trunk. Again, there are places you can still go to.

3) Time: This one I hear about a lot but don’t get and largely don’t agree with. One finds time for the things they love to do, whether it is playing video games for hours, or an entire weekend spent getting to a hangover and then nursing it, or 2 hours spent knitting on the train everyday (nothing wrong with it, but I’m just not one of those people).

4) Visas: This may not be obvious to many people who don’t need visas to travel in most countries. I must say that this has not been a deterrent for  us thankfully but can imagine the pain residents of some countries have to go through to plan travel. There was one occasion recently when we were traveling to Brazil when we had to go into NYC to drop off our passports and documents to obtain a tourist visa (we could collect by post but had to drop off the application in person — not cool). For many, this could be a botheration and just not worth the effort. I know a couple from India who wanted to go to Barbados for their honeymoon, but would have to go out of the country to obtain a visa! Umm yes, Barbados was not where they went for their honeymoon eventually.

5) Comfort Zone: Some people like their day to day lives, their routine, their coffee mug, pillow and the comfort of their couch. Getting out there, getting lost, figuring things out, a different language and food they may not like is not something they want to get into. Fair enough, but there’s got to be someplace that’s not too weird for you where you could go?

6) Career: Certain folks are so focussed on their careers that taking a break is inconceivable for them. In America, most workplaces only offer about 2 weeks of paid leave. In my very humble opinion that is just not enough to switch off, relax and detox from the work life. Taking 6 months off every year is obviously going to make it hard for you to remain at the top of senior management, but one should definitely be able to take more than 2 weeks off in a year to travel.

If you don’t travel, what are your reasons not to?

The chambray

I love the chambray shirt and how it can be dressed up and down. It is definitely not a new fashion item, you know your grandpa even owned one 😉

Here are some cool ways to wear a chambray shirt —

tied up with a maxi dress, over floral, printed or colored jeans or paired with a skirt.

anicca anicca anicca

Three words that could change your life. I know it’s one word repeated thrice(!) but it’s all the more profound when repeated, because you begin to feel it as you say it. Annica, in the tenets of Buddhism implies ‘impermanence’.

It dictates that everything in the world is impermanent. Thinking about this over and over leads you to another important aspect of Buddhism — non-attachment. When you start realizing that everything around you, within you, about you and everyone and everything else in the world is impermanent, you start to not feel that something is an end all to your being.

This is not to say that we must not be emotional about those we love, and not love or live with all out heart. But, it is to realize this truth and move through life with it.

If I am in extreme physical pain, I should know that it will pass. It is great to be happy, but to cling to it with wantonness is foolish as that is not to last either. The thought of a loved one dying breaks you inside, but we must know that there is an end to human life — ours and theirs. We are not the same person that we were 10 years ago, our emotions change, so does our life, sometimes our circumstances and our surroundings too. It is not just physically that we change, because of the science of the cells in our bodies undergoing division many times over.

As with any philosophical thought, there are many views and discussions, and many applications. I would like to think of anicca as hope — to expect tomorrow to be better than today. Today may be great, but why will tomorrow be any less. And if it is, we still know that there is something else up ahead.

I do also like to believe that some parts of me are permanent and will not change — my beliefs, principles and morals that form the core of me. There are definitely aspects that are re-analyzed over and over and re-adjusted but some little pieces will remain the same.

I would still say that although this concept easy to grasp, it is extremely hard to apply in life. Just saying that something is inevitable doesn’t always make it right, but hopefully it can make it a little easier to deal with.

A friend of mine who also lost their parent recently (which is a scale of 2-3 years ago for someone who has lost a parent) were talking and found how the first year was extremely hard to get through. Every day it hurt to get through life and we didn’t know how we would make it. The second year, the pain lessened and we now think about the happy times, the wonderful memories and our lives with them. If people had told me that this is how it would be when I was in that time, I would probably have not believed them. Now, I have no doubt that the way I remember my dad will change as I go through life, but I will always remember him, sometimes less, sometimes more, and in different ways and situations.

The concept of anicca was another invaluable lesson that my dad taught us about. He explained it to us by relating the idea to events and emotions in our day-to-day lives.
